The Yard – Chicago, IL -
The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare Theater is a masterclass in architectural adaptation, and nowhere is that more evident than in its striking elevator encasement. Suspended along the lakefront edge of Navy Pier, the structure appears both industrial and sculptural, acting as a vertical anchor to the adaptive reuse project designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and Charcoalblue.
Photographed from three distinct elevations, the elevator encasement reads like an independent work of public architecture. Its cladding, geometry, and exposed steel frame express a clarity of purpose, supporting the functional needs of the theater while elevating its presence within the urban landscape. The compositions explore the encasement’s form across light and perspective, honoring its role as both infrastructure and icon.
