Mile Hi Church (Fred Vogt Chapel), Lakewood, CO - Photographed 2016
In 2016, I documented the iconic Fred Vogt-designed dome chapel at Mile Hi Church, originally completed in 1973 under the direction of Dr. H. Fred Vogt. Built on farmland at Alameda and Garrison, this striking, futuristic dome became a community landmark and even appeared in Woody Allen’s Sleeper (1973).
Known affectionately as the “Spider Church,” its bold dome form reflected Vogt’s desire for a structure so innovative “it would draw expletives from surprised drivers” The expressive design aligns with the inclusive, spiritual ethos of the New Thought movement that defines Mile Hi Church.
My midday photography brought out the chapel’s sculptural quality, its curved form turning a spiritual vision into an architectural moment of surprise and delight.
