Barbican Condominiums, Des Moines

A bold expression of late modernism, the Barbican Condominiums in Des Moines stand as one of Iowa’s most distinctive residential towers. Completed in 1979 and designed by architect Mark C. Engelbrecht, this two-tower concrete complex is known for its streamlined balconies and sculptural massing. Though initially met with skepticism for its stark appearance, the Barbican has since become a landmark along Grand Avenue and earned a design award from the Iowa chapter of the AIA.
Photographed in 2017, my study captures the building’s striking presence in black and white, emphasizing its bold geometry, recessed balconies, and the tension between light and shadow that brutalist forms so naturally create.
