Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, NV — Photographed 2018
In 2003, the Nevada Museum of Art unveiled its landmark building, the Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, designed by Will Bruder. The four-level, ~70,000 ft² structure draws its sculptural form and dark zinc-clad facades from the Black Rock Desert’s rugged geological features, featuring torqued walls and textured anthra-zinc panels that mimic stone patina.
A significant expansion was completed in Spring 2016, enclosing the fourth-floor terrace to create the Fred W. Smith Penthouse with the Nightingale Sky Room, an adaptive event space framed by Sierra views.
The Museum has received prestigious honors, including accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, the National Award for Museum Service (1999), and an AIA Nevada design award for the original building in 2006.
I photographed the museum in 2018, doing an overnight stay in Reno while road tripping through the western United States. I captured the interplay of natural light, vertical circulation, and panoramic sky through its atrium and zinc-clad volumes, highlighting how Bruder’s design creates a dialogue between architecture, environment, and space.
